I was lucky enough to experience the aurora borealis several times during the 4 years that I lived in Alaska. Each time it was incredible. Nothing, however, will top the night in April 1994 that I spent on the deck of a ferry from Haines to Juneau watching the sky fill with red and purple, like brush strokes from a paintbrush. Truly amazing.

I am guessing that you must have been up there during the April 17th, 1994 geomagnetic storm. That was quite a good one. There was another good one on the 3rd also.
