Snow at last

After a couple of hours of stop-and-start flurries, it finally seems to be snowing steadily in Cockeysville. The surface temperature remains pretty warm - 38 degrees on the back deck here. So it's not surprising that the snow appears to be melting soon after it lands.

The radar still has it appearing as rain, and the Weather Channel is calling it "light drizzle." But it's all snow in the air here.

And as this storm moves off the coast and intensifies, we can expect it to get colder and lots snowier. The barometer on the deck has been falling off a cliff since 8 a.m. The humidity has been climbing, too - a good sign for snow. And the National Weather Service is still calling for heavy snow late today and overnight - 8 to 14 inches before it's all over tomorrow morning. Here's what they were saying late this morning:

"...HEAVY SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM EST SUNDAY...

"LIGHT RAIN AND SNOW WILL CHANGE OVER TO ALL SNOW DURING THE LATE
MORNING. THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN INTENSITY THROUGH
THE AFTERNOON HOURS...WITH GENERALLY 1 TO 3 INCHES OF SNOW
EXPECTED BY LATE AFTERNOON. THE SNOW WILL INTENSIFY THIS
EVENING...BECOMING HEAVY AT TIMES. BEFORE SNOW ENDS EARLY SUNDAY
MORNING...TOTAL SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED TO BE 8 TO 14 INCHES.

"A HEAVY SNOW WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST
THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. AVOID UNNECESSARY TRAVEL. ALWAYS
CARRY A WINTER SAFETY KIT WITH EMERGENCY SUPPLIES IF YOU MUST
TRAVEL IN A SNOWSTORM."

Leave us comments as the storm develops. Let us know what you're seeing in your location. We may as well have some fun with this. It may be the only big storm we get this year. And don't forget to send your best digital storm photos to MarylandWeather.com's "Reader's Photos" gallery. You can find it at the bottom of the MarylandWeather.com main page.

Its 2:36pm here in SW Baltimore. I live 3 blocks east of Westside Shopping Center. Still rain here.
Sorta looked like it might be snow and rain or sleet and rain there for a minute but it settled back to rain. Nothing steady just enough to keep the streets wet and those outdoors miserable.

I'm sitting here in Las Vegas where the high will be 72 degrees today. It's days like this back in Maryland that makes me happy that I moved!!

It's 2:45pm in Owings Mills. The snow continues to fall, and it's starting to stick. I don't see how it could accumulate more than 4 inches if I'm reading the radar correctly. Either way, I'm sure I've got enough food in the pantry to make it through if we get 10 plus inches.
Enjoy!

Hagerstown has heavy snowfall, but it's melting on the roadway. Big heavy flakes with grassy areas just now being covered. Started about 1pm.

well it finally changed over to snow here in SW Baltimore. Falling steady now. At first it was hard and grainy. Now its that soft fluffy kind. It melts the second it hits the streets and cars. Got to get a lot colder and snow a lot more to meet predictions.

Its springtime on the Florida Keys... right now I am sorry I am not there, like I was this time last yr.

5:00 here in Carroll county starting to stick to asphalt roads just waiting a couple more hours to lock in the hubs and go play in the snow

hello All, we just got in from aberdeen, and its coming down there pretty good, back in rosedale we are gathering with WMWX FM for another great photo shoot. Look at the gallery for storm pics coming soon!!
